Supreme Court bins PIL against cancellation of UGC-NET

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a PIL challenging the Centre’s decision to cancel the UGC-NET examination for alleged question paper leak.

A Bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, however, clarified the dismissal of the PIL did not amount to a decision on the merits of the case as it was not filed by an aggrieved party.

“Why are you coming? Let the students come here themselves,” the CJI told the petitioner advocate Ujjawal Gaur.

As it refused to entertain the PIL, the Bench made it clear that it had not said anything on the merits of the issue.

The Bench, including Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, asked Gaur to focus on legal matters and leave such issues for aggrieved persons. The PIL had challenged the June 19 decision of the Union Education Ministry and the National Testing Agency to cancel the examination following inputs that its integrity may have been compromised and ordered a CBI probe into it.
