BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Thursday accused a TMC MP of smoking e-cigarettes in the Lok Sabha.

Thakur made the accusation during question hour, asking Speaker Om Birla if these were allowed in the House. When Birla replied in the negative, Thakur said a Trinamool Congress MP - whom he did not name - had been "smoking e-cigarettes in the House for the past several days".

Accusing the TMC MP of "continuously vaping" in the Parliament, Thakur said, “I just want to request something so that the House knows. E-Cigarettes are banned in the country. Have you (Speaker) allowed it in the House? TMC MPs are using e-cigarettes in the House,” Thakur alleged.

Responding to the question, Birla said, “It has not been permitted. All members are expected to follow the rules. If such things come to light, I will take strict action.”

The TMC had not commented on the matter till the time this report was filed.

Meanwhile several BJP MPs pressed for action against the Opposition member, prompting loud protests in the House. Birla appealed for calm and reminded members to uphold parliamentary decorum, adding that he would act if a formal written complaint was submitted.

Later, the BJP attacked the TMC, alleging that its lawmaker had set a new record of lowering the dignity of Parliament with his conduct.

The BJP also asked the TMC leadership whether the party would take any action against the "erring" leader for his misconduct or would it wait for the Speaker to act against him.
