West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose briefs Amit Shah on law & order situation in state

New Delhi, August 30

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and is learnt to have discussed the current law and order situation in the state, in the aftermath of the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and ensuing protests.

Bose is likely to provide a detailed report on the situation in West Bengal to the Centre amid speculation of the government evaluating various options, even as the incident is being investigated by the CBI.

The Governor had arrived in Delhi on Thursday evening for the scheduled meeting. Last week, Bose had also met President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar to brief them on the incident and the events that unfolded in the state.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has again written to PM Narendra Modi, seeking a “stringent Central legislation and exemplary punishment on heinous crimes of rape and murder with mandatory provision for disposal of cases in a specific time frame by the trial authorities”.

She had earlier written to Modi on August 22, seeking a strong law on crimes like rape and murder. In the second letter, dated August 29, she said she was writing to him again as she had not received any response from him.

Nationwide protests have been taking place, particularly in Kolkata, over the trainee doctor’s rape and murder, with protesters demanding swift action in the case.

On August 27, in Kolkata, university students led the crowds in breaking the barricades set up by the security forces to demand the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.
