Senior BJP leader and union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday slammed the new anti-rape bill of Bengal as an attempt to deflect attention from the RG Kar hospital crime and asked if the West Bengal government would move to prosecute and hang Sheikh Shahjahan under the new law.

"I have only one question to ask of Mamata Banerjee. Will she hang her party leader Sheikh Shahjahan under this new law? Countless women of Sandeshkhali have levelled serious charges of sexual crimes against him. Will he be hanged?" asked Shivraj.

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Chouhan said why Mamata was waiting to enact the bill.

"MP was the first state to enact the law prescribing death penalty for grave sexual assault and 42 people have been convicted under the law. Mamata Banerjee simply wants to divert people's attention from the RG Kar horror. Why didn't she bring the bill earlier," Chouhan said.
