PBKS-DC clash called off amid blackout
For the first time in the history of Indian Premier League, floodlights were switched off and a full-scale evacuation was carried out at the HPCA Stadium here after air attacks from Pakistan were reported at various cities in northern India.
The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was interrupted during the 11th over of the first innings. Notably, the organisers claimed that the match was stopped due to a technical glitch in the floodlights. The timing of the act raised questions over the organisers’ claim. As soon as reports spread regarding attacks on air bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Jalandhar, the match was stopped in no time. Out of the four floodlights, two were dimmed initially followed by a sudden blackout.
While the franchisee owners were the first to leave the stadium, players too followed the evacuation process. The spectators were also asked to leave the field. Notably, a mock drill was also conducted before the match.
Meanwhile, all roads nearby the stadium were flooded with vehicles and spectators trying to reach their respective destinations.
The match, which was delayed by rain, was going in favour of Punjab Kings with 121/1 on board in 10.1 overs. Priyansh Arya scored 70 off 34 balls, with five boundaries and six sixes, and Prabhsimran Singh made 50 off 28 balls, with seven boundaries.
As soon as Arya was caught out and skipper Shreyas Iyer came to the crease, the floodlights were dimmed by the organisers. Thereafter, the evacuation was started, and soon the stadium, which was wearing a bright look, descended into darkness.
Match shifted
Much before the match was called off, news of the May 11 match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians being shifted to Ahmedabad started doing the rounds. And soon the confirmation came from BCCI. The match was shifted due to the closure of the Gaggal and Chandigarh airports.
“IPL Match No. 61 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, originally scheduled to be played in Dharamsala on Sunday, May 11, has been relocated to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The venue change has been necessitated due to logistical challenges,” stated the IPL managing committee.
The latest development puts a shadow of doubt over the continuation
of the league.
