Eight members of a family, including five children, were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Anantnag district on Saturday, officials said.

A policeman, two women and five children, aged between six and 16, were among the dead, they said.

The accident took place near Arshan on the Daksum-Kishtwar road, the officials said, adding that the vehicle was on its way from Kishtwar towards Daksum when the driver lost control over it. The vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the gorge. The family of eight died on the spot, they said. Soon after the accident, senior police and administration officials reached the spot.
