In an effort to extend a helping hand to the nomadic Gujjars of Kishtwar, Army distributed solar lights and cold climate amenities among the community members. The initiative was carried out by Army under Operation Sadbhavana.

“Kishtwar district is an under developed remote area which has no visible development due to social backwardness prevalent in the local populace and turmoil in the social circles due to activities of anti-national elements,” Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, PRO Defence, said.

He said that Kishtwar district being located in one of the remote parts of J&K lacks basic amenities and infrastructure for livelihood.

“During interaction with Gujjar and Bakkarwal community at Chichha, Kishtwar, the residents had requested for provision of solar lights and cold climate amenities to be distributed due to lack of proper supply of electricity and inclement weather in the region. With decline in insurgency and prevailing peace in the area, the populace is now keen to improve their standard of living,” the PRO said. He said it is thus imperative that local Gujjar and Bakkarwal community be helped by provision of solar lights and amenities for cold climate.

The scarcity of electricity during harsh weather period makes life very difficult severely affecting the lives of Gujjar and Bakarwal community. “With the distribution of solar lights and cold climate amenities, a total of 30 residents were benefitted. These efforts of Army has been greatly appreciated and lauded by the senior citizens and other prominent personalities,” the PRO said.
