Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsAmid the prevailing mourning in Ladakh over the killing of four locals during the September 24 protests, the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) has appealed for low-key Diwali celebrations this year.
The youth wing of the association has written to the Hindu Mahasabha, Leh, requesting that the scale of celebrations be minimised.
“As you are aware, on September 24, our region witnessed a tragic incident in which four brave martyrs lost their lives. It has not yet been a month since their sacrifice and as a mark of mourning and respect, the entire Ladakh region has collectively kept a resolution and mutual understanding to minimise all forms of social and festive gatherings for a period of three months, beginning from September 24,” the letter stated.
It further added, “In light of this, we wish to inform your good self that October 20 marks the auspicious occasion of Diwali. While we deeply respect this sacred festival, the Ladakh Buddhist Association Youth Wing humbly requests your esteemed association and community members to kindly limit the scale of celebrations, especially by avoiding day and night firecrackers, singing and dancing during this mourning period.”
The letter emphasised that the Buddhist community of Ladakh “fully acknowledge and support the observance of religious and ritual practices associated with Diwali” and encouraged offering prayers for peace, harmony and the well-being of all.
“We sincerely hope you will accept this request with understanding and cooperation, in the spirit of unity and respect for our martyrs,” it concluded.
