Chinar Strikers win hockey tourney
Srinagar, August 30
Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament being played since August 19 at Polo View Hockey Stadium, Srinagar, concluded on Thursday, Indian Army said on Friday.
The tournament finished on Thursday with a match between Chinar Strikers and Baramula. Chinar Strikers won 1-0.
The tournament was organised by Headquarter 31 Sub-Area of Srinagar-based 15 Corps in collaboration with J-K Sports Council to commemorate National Sports Day, which is celebrated in honour of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand.
12 teams took part
- A total of 12 teams from 10 districts of Kashmir valley participated in the tournament
- A total of 12 league matches and two semifinals were played for run-up to the final
The tournament was also supported by Liberty Group who distributed hockey shoes and bags to the players, the Army said.

Ramandeep from Baramula was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ medal for his outstanding performance in the final. Muneer from Shopian was awarded ‘Best Goalkeeper’ of the tournament for displaying solid defence at the goal post. Kamal from Chinar Strikers was adjudged ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his exceptional performance throughout the tournament, the statement said.
To promote women’s hockey in Kashmir valley, an exhibition match was played between Baramula and Srinagar before commencement of the final.
GOC Chinar Corps was the chief guest for the final along with GOC 31 Sub Area. Padma Shri awardee Pargat Singh, former Indian hockey captain, was the special guest for the final.
