Jammu, June 9

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Tuesday blamed the BJP government’s failure to provide security cover for regular targeted killing of panches and sarpanches in Kashmir.

The Congress has alleged that the police and administrative officials should be made accountable for the lapses which led to the killing of sarpanch Ajay Pandita Bharti in Anantnag.

“It’s a big security lapse. The BJP government has totally failed to protect elected representatives. We have taken up the security issue of sarpanches and panches several times, but the administration has never taken any steps,” said GA Mir, JKPCC president.

Mir attended the cremation of the slain sarpanch in Jammu.

Mir said despite threats from militants, Ajay, a Congress Kashmir Pandit worker, participated in the panchayat elections but the BJP government totally failed him.
