As part of an ongoing crackdown on adulterated food items, Srinagar Police have registered an FIR following the seizure of nearly 13,000 kilograms of “decomposed and unsafe meat” in the past week.

In a joint operation, Srinagar Police and the Food Safety Department conducted raids at multiple locations across the city, targeting vendors suspected of selling unhygienic and expired meat.

A police spokesperson said that during the operation, substantial quantities of rotten meat were seized and destroyed on the spot under relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

In one significant raid, authorities discovered rotten meat stored in a cold storage facility in Parimpora. The facility was sealed, and the decomposed meat was seized in collaboration with officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The spokesperson confirmed that the operation is part of an intensified campaign to protect public health and enforce strict compliance with food safety standards.

Acting on credible information received at Zakoora police station, authorities identified Abdul Hameed Kuchay, a resident of Soura and operator of Sunshine Foods located at SICOP Zakoora, as a prime suspect.

He is alleged to have conspired with Arif Ahmad Shah, a resident of Baghat Barzulla, to supply large quantities of decomposed meat unfit for human consumption to hotels and restaurants across Srinagar.

“This deliberate act of distributing rotten meat poses a serious threat to public health and constitutes a grave offence under applicable laws,” the spokesperson said.

Consequently, an FIR has been registered at Zakoora police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is currently underway.

Srinagar Police emphasised that inspections and legal actions will continue in coordination with concerned departments to ensure accountability across the food supply chain.

Meanwhile, authorities across Jammu and Kashmir have intensified enforcement efforts amid growing concerns over substandard meat being sold in local markets. Most seizures have taken place in the Kashmir Valley, where large quantities of rotten mutton, chicken and other meat products have been confiscated.
