Human trafficking racket busted in Baramulla

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday said it has busted a human trafficking module operating in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and recovered four Rohingya girls.

An official spokesperson said acting on a tip off, Baramulla police busted a human trafficking module operating in Ushkura, Baramulla. The investigation revealed that Shakeel Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Ushkura, was involved in the trafficking and exploitation of minor girls from outside Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesperson said.

He said a case was registered at Baramulla police station and a police team raided Bhat’s house, recovering three minor girls, who are from Myanmar. The search was conducted in the presence of a magistrate and woman police officials, the spokesperson said. During interrogation, Bhat confessed to selling a girl to Mehraj Ahmad Tantray, a resident of Kanlibagh. “A subsequent raid at Tantray’s house led to the recovery of a minor girl from Myanmar’s Rohingya community, following which Tantray was arrested,” the spokesperson noted.

“The police are holding further investigations to apprehend other suspects involved in this human trafficking racket,” the spokerperson said.
