In all, six no-parking zones created to monitor traffic

In all, six ‘no-parking zones’ have been constituted in Srinagar city. The traffic police and the Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC) have been tasked to enforce the ban on roadside parking in areas located in the central city. The no-parking zones will be established in the following areas from Lal Chowk to Dalgate, Lal Chowk to Jehangir Chowk, Jehangir Chowk to Naaz Crossing, Secretariat Road to Batamaloo and Jehangir Chowk to Karan Nagar.

Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Baseer Ahmad Khan took the decision on Saturday in pursuance to the directions given by the High Court in respect of a public interest litigation regarding traffic management, a government spokesman said.

Traffic chaos has become a routine affair, as administration has failed to provide proper parking facilities to thousands of vehicles that enter the city areas, including major markets, government and private offices and headquarter of the administration.

In the recent years, the administration has taken multiple measures, which however have failed to streamline the growing flow of traffic in the city. In another attempt to solve the problem, the Divisional Commissioner has ordered the constitution of six ‘no parking zones’ and directed the Traffic Department to ply speaker mounted vehicles in the designated zones.

Khan directed the Traffic Department to use speaker mounted vehicles to announce that no vehicle was allowed to park on roads and drivers were to use only the designated parking slots.

The Traffic Department was also asked to deploy its teams and the SMC was directed to deploy its enforcement wing to put an end to illegal parking. “One magistrate will be provided by Srinagar Deputy Commissioner for each zone,” the spokesman said.

The SMC authorities were also asked to install no parking signage in the zones within three days. The exercise will be monitored by the Deputy Commissioner. The Divisional Commissioner has also issued directions to Deputy Commissioners concerned and SP Traffic (Rural) that no parking should take place along the national highway and laid stress on officials to implement the directions “in letter and spirit so that no traffic violation takes place”.
