India home to 5,500 of world’s top 2% scientists: Minister
Addressing the gathering, Dr Singh highlighted India’s significant achievements in science and technology over the past decade. “India has made a global mark, ranking third in the world in startup ecosystems with over 1.7 lakh startups. Today, over 55 per cent of patents are filed by resident Indians, and we are home to more than 5,500 of the world’s top 2 per cent scientists,” he stated.
The minister emphasised India’s advancements in space exploration, biotechnology and preventive healthcare, citing milestones like Chandrayaan’s success, vaccine development and gene research. “India is now recognised as a global leader in these fields,” he added.
The IIT Jammu Expo 2025 showcased cutting-edge innovations from leading academic institutions, startups and industry leaders, aiming to foster entrepreneurship and scientific temper among students, researchers and professionals.
Reflecting on IIT Jammu’s journey, Dr Singh recalled its early days and credited the 2014 BJP government for ensuring Jammu received its rightful share in educational development. “I have witnessed IIT Jammu’s growth from its inception and today, it stands as a centre of excellence in education and innovation,” he said.
Encouraging students and faculty to embrace private-sector collaboration, he urged them to break away from skepticism and seek exclusive innovations. “IITians are pioneers in exploring new frontiers. The government is fully supportive and the opportunities are immense,” he remarked.
Dr Singh also highlighted key government initiatives such as Startup India and Aroma Mission, which have created equal socio-economic opportunities and drawn professionals into entrepreneurial ventures. “The ecosystem for innovation and startups is in place. It is now up to us to leverage it for India’s progress,” he said.
The IIT Jammu Expo 2025 served as a platform for knowledge-sharing, fostering scientific curiosity and encouraging India’s youth to drive technological advancements for the nation’s future.
