Security forces today eliminated a top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander, Sham Sofi, during an encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir, police officials said.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of terrorists at Tilwani Mohalla Waggad in the Tral area of Pulwama district, the security forces launched a cordon and search operation there, a police official said, adding that an encounter broke out after the militants opened fire at the security men, who retaliated.

In the exchange of fire, the militant was killed, an official said. IGP (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar tweeted, “Top JeM commander Sham Sofi killed in Tral encounter.” — TNS
