The Fourth LG Horse Polo Cup-2024 tournament was inaugurated at Drass in Kargil on Wednesday. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Brig BD Mishra (retd) inaugurated the tournament at Goshan Stadium, which has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 6.84 crore.

The L-G appreciated the organisers, players and the audience on the occasion. Highlighting the significance of horse polo, the L-G stated that the game fosters proper coordination between the player and horse and enhances the skills.

The L-G stated that the administration sent 12 girls from Kargil to Delhi for horse riding and polo training with the President’s Bodyguard. He also stated that efforts would be made to invite the President or the Vice-President at the horse polo event at Drass.

Earlier, the L-G performed the throw-in ceremony to signal the commencement of the opening match between Himalayan-A and Himalayan-B teams.

On the occasion, chairman, LAHDC Kargil, Mohd Jaffer Akhoon discussed the historical significance of polo, highlighting its cultural roots and regional importance. The CEC emphasised the need for sports infrastructure and facilities to ensure that the players don’t have to travel outside Ladakh for training. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Lieutenant Governor for granting district status to Drass.

Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa welcomed the L-G and thanked him for his efforts in promoting traditional sports across Ladakh. He highlighted the talent of Ladakhi youth and emphasised the importance of proper infrastructure, training and facilities for them.
