With an aim to transforming agricultural practices in the picturesque landscapes of Leh, a charitable trust, Phia Foundation, unveiled Project Himalaya, which focuses on sustainable farming techniques and economic empowerment.

A daylong training-cum-exposure visit to the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), Leh, was conducted in which many farmers, from various parts of the UT participated.

During the training session, attended by 86 farmers hailing from Kharu, Thiksey, and Chuchot, they were equipped with knowledge on organic cultivation, innovative vegetable farming techniques in polycarbonate greenhouses, and the intricacies of value chain development for milk and vegetables.

Technical experts from DIHAR shared their expertise, leaving the farmers inspired and empowered to implement diverse farming techniques. Their feedback underscored immense satisfaction with the training programme, expressing confidence in the potential to significantly boost their farm income over the next three years.

Mohammad Ali, Project Manager, Phia Foundation, said “By harnessing the power of knowledge-sharing and innovative farming practices, we are not only enhancing the livelihoods of our farmers but also fostering sustainable development within the region.”

He said that Project Himalaya exemplifies a holistic approach towards rural development, emphasising community empowerment, and environmental sustainability. “Through the formation of producer groups and the adoption of modern agricultural techniques, the project aims to create a ripple effect, catalyzing socio-economic progress across the region” said Ali.
