While fleeing, the militants also took away the guns of both SPOs. The slain SPO was identified as Khursheed Iqbal of Palmar and the injured SPO as Vishal Singh of the Padder area in Kishtwar district. Both of them were on patrol duty in upper areas of Tandar.

The police said the militants attacked the SPOs with sharp weapons, probably axes, around 1 pm. “The SPOs were unable to react as they were attacked from behind. Khursheed was killed on the spot, while Vishal suffered serious injuries,” said a police officer.

A manhunt was launched by the security forces to nab the militants, but they couldn’t trace them till evening.

In a late evening statement, the police said two local youths of Tandar, Ashiq Hussain and Basharat Hussain, were involved in the incident. “Ashiq Hussain is a rape accused who got bail 20 days ago. He was lodged in Kishtwar district jail,” the police statement said.

This is the first militancy-related incident in Kishtwar district this year.
