The management committee of the Jamia Masjid here on Friday condemned the “unjust house arrest” of Hurriyat Conference chairman and Jamia Masjid chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

“While the Prime Minister and Home Minister speak tirelessly about a new vision for Kashmir, a voice advocating peace and dialogue is silenced through force, and his official, religious, and social responsibilities are unjustly curtailed,” the Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid said, adding that Mirwaiz was put under house arrest for the fourth consecutive Friday.

Appealing to all “conscientious citizens and human rights organisations to raise their voices against the unjust policies” of the authorities concerning Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, the management said it organised a conference on Friday and the event was supposed to be presided by Mirwaiz, but “he continues to be under house arrest by the authorities, preventing him from attending the gathering.”

“Participants and scholars strongly condemned the house arrest of Mirwaiz. This has led to disappointment among the devotees, who came to the grand masjid,” the statement said.
