The National Conference’s (NC) two-day Central Working Committee meeting, which concluded on Friday in Srinagar, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and demanded the immediate return of statehood. An NC spokesperson said the party passed seven resolutions unanimously during the meeting held on November 27 and 28.

The spokesperson said the committee “reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status,” noting that the issue “is central to the aspirations and dignity of the people and must be addressed without further delay.”

The party also adopted a resolution urging the Government of India to restore full statehood “as promised on the floor of Parliament, repeatedly affirmed in the public domain, and noted by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court.”

In another resolution, the committee expressed serious concern and strongly condemned the terror attack in Delhi, offering condolences to the families of the victims. “In a civilised society, violence has no place, and such heinous acts must be dealt with firmly and decisively,” the spokesperson said.

On the blast at Nowgam police station, which left nine people dead and 32 injured, the committee expressed deep concern and sympathy for the affected families. It called for a high-level investigation and accountability for any lapses in standard operating procedures.

The NC also voiced “deep concern” over reports of harassment faced by students, traders, and residents of Jammu and Kashmir in different parts of the country. The committee condemned their selective targeting following recent events and emphasised that Kashmiris must not be stereotyped. It urged state governments across India to ensure the “safety, dignity, and protection” of all residents from Jammu and Kashmir. “Not every Kashmiri is a terrorist or a supporter of terror,” the spokesperson said.

The Working Committee further reiterated the party’s commitment to fulfilling the promises made in its manifesto. It also expressed unanimous support for the Omar Abdullah-led government, urging it to continue upholding the dignity and aspirations of the people.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said terror attacks like Pahalgam and the Delhi blast will not occur again if statehood is restored, as the responsibility for security will rest with the elected government.

“Did attacks like those in Pahalgam or Delhi happen while we were responsible for security? I was the chief minister for six years. Did an attack like the one in Pahalgam take place? Or one like in Delhi? Hand over the responsibility to us, and then see what happens,” Abdullah said and added that “if we fail, then revoke statehood.” The CM also emphasised that he hasn’t lost hope on the restoration of statehood.
