India’s top central tertiary care hospital All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi on Friday got its first woman medical superintendent in the 68-year history of the institute.

Nirupam Madaan was appointed AIIMS MS today with the hospital and teaching institute creating history by naming a woman for the top job.

Madaan is currently professor in the Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS New Delhi. She hails from Jammu and Kashmir.

She will hold the position for three years.

Interviews for the hotly contested post were held on December 24 last year.

Nirupam Madaan was born in Jammu. She graduated from Government Medical College, Jammu and did her postgraduation from Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Soura, Srinagar.
