Omar asks ministers to visit states to ensure safety of J&K students, businessmen

Chief Minister (CM) Omar Abdullah on Friday said he has deputed cabinet ministers to various cities across the country to reassure students and businessmen from Jammu & Kashmir following reports of targeted harassment in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

“I have deputed my Cabinet Ministers to various cities across the country. The purpose of these visits is to coordinate efforts with the respective state governments and ensure the safety and well-being of J&K residents,” Omar wrote on his official account.

He added that the J&K Government, “will stand with its people—anywhere, everywhere.”

The move comes after several alarming reports surfaced of Kashmiri students being assaulted, harassed, or threatened in different states following the attack in Pahalgam. In response, the government has also set up a toll-free helpline — 1800-8900-166 — at the Raabita Office in Srinagar to provide round-the-clock assistance to any student facing threats or intimidation.

“The helpline will operate round-the-clock and is equipped to address grievances, offer assistance and coordinate with local authorities wherever needed,” a government spokesperson said in a statement.

He said the CM has expressed “deep concern over the unfolding situation and reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to uphold the rights, dignity of every student from Jammu & Kashmir and ensure a safe environment for them, no matter where they are pursuing their education.”

The spokesperson further urged educational institutions and state administrations across the country to ensure the protection of students from J&K and act decisively against those attempting to disturb communal harmony.

“Students and their families have been asked to report any incident or concern via the toll-free helpline. The government assures swift response and necessary support in every genuine case reported,” he added.
