Leh, July 5

BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav arrived on a three-day visit to Leh today. The visit holds significance in the wake of the recent developments in the party Ladakh unit.

The BJP UT state president, former minister Chering Dorjay Lakrook, had resigned from the party post in May, blaming the UT administration for its “failure” to evacuate passengers, patients, pilgrims and students stranded in various parts of the country during the coronavirus outbreak. Lakrook, in his resignation, had blamed the UT administration for undermining the Hill Council, thereby “neglecting the people’s mandate”.

Madhav’s visit is expected to solve the rift between the council and the UT for better coordination.

Madhav held meetings with the councillor, headed by Hill Council chairman Gyal P Wangyal, in the presence of Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal. A delegation from Zanskar, led by the Cha constituency councillor Stanzin Lakpa, also met Madhav with the demand to announce separate district for the Zanskar region at the earliest. It was learnt that all councillors requested Madhav to bring back former minister Chering Dorjay Lakrook into the party fold.

The BJP leader will meet Dalai Lama and Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee birth anniversary celebrations at the party office on Monday.
