Restore J&K’s statehood, Dy CM urges Centre

Jammu and Kashmir’s Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, urged the Centre to fulfil its promise of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Choudhary made the remarks while unfurling the national flag at the 76th Republic Day celebrations at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar on Sunday. During the event, Choudhary, who also inspected the parade and took the salute from the contingents, reiterated his demand for the restoration of statehood. He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to honour their commitment made earlier, which promised statehood once a government is formed in the region.

“The restoration of statehood is crucial to win the hearts of the people and bring stability to J&K,” Choudhary said.

He also expressed confidence that the current government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, would work to fulfil its election promises, particularly in safeguarding the interests of the people and creating employment opportunities for the youth. The Deputy CM emphasised the significance of the Constitution in shaping the country’s governance, protecting citizens’ rights and upholding democracy. He further stressed that secularism remains the foundation of India, with the Constitution ensuring dignity and honour for all citizens.

Addressing the issue of drug abuse, he urged the youth to stay away from drugs, stating that intensified measures were being taken to combat the drug menace and dismantle its networks.

He also spoke on the issue of Kashmiri Pandits, stating that proactive steps were being taken to ensure their return to their homes.
