Jammu, June 2
Taking cognisance of the report published in The Tribune regarding hardships being faced by 50,000 families of drivers and helpers of minibuses, the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has appealed to the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, to save these families from starvation.
In a letter written to the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, MK Sharma, member secretary, J&K SLSA, stated, “The daily English newspaper ‘The Tribune’ in its edition of June 1, 2020, carried a news item highlighting the woes of over 50,000 families of drivers and helpers of minibuses and buses across the UT of J&K, who are on the verge of starvation due to ban imposed on movement of passenger vehicles due to the lockdown since March 2019.”
Sharma further mentioned, “It is true that the medical impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has itself been a major challenge, but as a responsible government it is our duty also to ensure that nobody sleeps hungry.”
“You are, therefore, requested to take appropriate measure to ensure that this class of society is also provided some immediate relief,” Sharma asked the Divisional Commissioner.
