Security at temples strengthened in Jammu region ahead of I-Day

Security forces have heightened vigilance around temples in Jammu city and other parts of the region ahead of Independence Day, following intelligence inputs suggesting that terror handlers are collecting information about prominent religious sites.

Jammu, home to several significant and ancient temples, has come under increased scrutiny after intelligence agencies intercepted communications indicating that Over Ground Workers (OGWs) had been tasked with gathering details about temples in urban areas.

Sources revealed that a comprehensive security audit of all major religious institutions is currently underway to ensure their protection during the upcoming August 15 celebrations.

“Some intercepted messages show terror groups instructing OGWs to collect information about specific religious sites. While such intercepts are not uncommon ahead of national events, agencies are exercising heightened caution, especially after the recent Pahalgam attack in which innocent civilians were targeted,” said a senior intelligence official.

The Jammu Police are conducting focused security reviews of temples in the city, even though major temples already have considerable security measures in place. Authorities, however, are determined to leave no stone unturned.

Terrorist groups have previously targeted pilgrims visiting religious sites in the region. In June last year, nine pilgrims were killed when a group of Pakistani terrorists opened fire on a bus carrying them from the Shiv Khori shrine to Katra. Earlier in May 2022, four people were killed and 20 injured when a sticky bomb, reportedly planted by militants, caused a fire on a bus carrying pilgrims in Katra.

Security agencies have successfully neutralised several terrorists in recent operations across both Kashmir and Jammu. However, terror groups are reportedly making renewed efforts to infiltrate operatives into India through the borders.
