Srinagar, December 11

Incumbent Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo and Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) are set to face no-confidence motion as the BJP is trying to wrest the control of the municipality.

Matoo and Sheikh, who are under detention since August 5 when Article 370 was abrogated, would be asked to prove their support of 36 councillors in the next few weeks. Officials said the BJP had zeroed in on several of their candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The party has invoked laws, which call for moving no-confidence motion against Mayor for not holding corporation business meetings.

Sources said Arif Majeed Pampori and Nazir Ahmad Gilkar have been nominated by the BJP for nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.

They said former minister of the BJP Sunil Kumar Sharma was in Srinagar today to discuss the modalities for it.
