Snow in Kashmir, mercury at freezing point
Most parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar city, received a fresh spell of snowfall on Sunday, as temperatures stayed close to the freezing point in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir for the second consecutive day.
Snowfall was witnessed in several areas of Bandipora, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts in north Kashmir, along with some parts of Budgam and Ganderbal districts in central Kashmir during the morning hours, officials said. Later in the evening, Srinagar city and some areas in south Kashmir also received snowfall.
The summer capital continued to experience an intense cold wave, with the maximum temperature recorded at just 1.5° Celsius on Sunday. The mercury remained below 2° Celsius for the past 48 hours, as the maximum temperature was 1.2 ° Celsius on Saturday.
Night temperatures also dropped, with Kokernag town in South Kashmir recording a low of minus 8.1° Celsius. In Srinagar, the minimum temperature settled at minus 2.5° Celsius.
