Srinagar, September 15

Security forces on Tuesday called off an anti-militancy operation after a brief gunfight in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. While the militants managed to give the forces a slip, a soldier was wounded in the operation.

A security official said the encounter broke out early in the morning after joint teams of the forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Marwal Kakapora area of Pulwama.

“The militants opened fire on the forces, injuring a Rashtriya Rifles personnel,” the official said.

Meanwhile, two photojournalists were allegedly beaten up by the police while they were covering the anti-militancy operation in Pulwama.

One of them was identified as Kamran Yousuf.

“I was at the encounter site along with a few more photojournalists in the morning when a group of policemen caught hold of him and started beating him with lathis without any reason. I somehow managed to run away. I received injuries due to the thrashing,” he said.

The police did not respond to the allegations.
