Jammu and Kashmir Police today said they arrested three persons allegedly involved in drug peddling in Shopian district of south Kashmir and the Sopore area of north Kashmir, seizing contraband substances from their possession, a police statement said.

In Shopian, the statement said a police team stopped a suspicious person attempting to flee. “Upon his search, 7.4 kg of poppy straw-like substance concealed in a nylon bag was found in his possession. The suspect, identified as Tariq Ahmed Rather of Kulgam, has been arrested and detained at the police station,” the police said.

Similarly, another alleged drug peddler, identified as Mashooq Ahmad Sheikh of Kulgam, was arrested during a routine check by the Shopian police station.

The police claimed to have recovered 140 gm of charas powder-like substance from his possession.

In Sopore, the police said they stopped a person during routine checks. “On searching, seven bottles of Codeine Phosphate were found in his possession,” the police claimed. The suspect, identified as Owais Mushtaq Hakeem of Sopore, has been taken into custody at the local police station, the police said.
