Tricolour unfurled for first time at Tral, once home to top ultras
Tral, once known as a hub of militant activities in South Kashmir, witnessed a historic moment on Sunday when the national flag was unfurled for the first time, as part of Republic Day celebrations. This milestone event, described as a “historic moment” by the Army, marked a significant shift for the town, which has long been associated with unrest.
The flag-hoisting ceremony, attended by over 1,000 enthusiastic locals, was part of a broader effort by the defence forces to celebrate the spirit of unity, patriotism and national pride across Kashmir. The Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps organised multiple events throughout the region, focusing on community engagement and youth inspiration.
Tral, which was once home to militants like Hizbul Mujahideen’s Burhan Wani and Zakir Musa, has seen a transformation in recent years, with militancy now largely under control. The Army’s efforts to foster peace and stability have been crucial in this change. “This milestone not only marked a new chapter for Tral, long known for unrest, but also stood as a testament to the success of peace-building initiatives by the Army,” a defence spokesperson said.
The celebrations also featured welfare activities that showcased the Army’s commitment to national integration and its close ties with local communities. “These events emphasised the shared values of patriotism, security and progress, reflecting the unyielding resolve of the Army in safeguarding the Nation’s sovereignty and integrity,” the spokesperson added.
In Baramulla, similar events were held, including a “Know Your Army” exhibition that demonstrated the operational strength and technological advancements of the forces, including drone flypasts and artillery displays.
According to the Army, the Republic Day events across the Valley reflected the region’s aspirations for peace, unity and progress. “The unwavering participation of locals and collaborative efforts of security forces underscored the commitment to build a harmonious and prosperous future,” the spokesperson remarked.
