Jammu, August 2
Two children died while 12 others fell sick after allegedly consuming food at a wedding ceremony at a village in Udhampur district.
The incident took place at Satyalta village in Ghordi block of Udhampur on Friday. As many as 14 people, including children, were referred to the Government Medical College (GMC), Udhampur, on Friday. Out of these, two were further referred to GMC, Jammu.
According to reports, 12 children and two adults who attended the wedding three days ago fell sick after experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting. They were rushed to Ramnagar sub-hospital from where they were further referred to GMC, Udhampur.
“The children showed symptoms of intense vomiting and diarrhoea and were admitted to the hospital,” the Medical Superintendent of GMC, Udhampur, Dr Sanjeev Sharma, said.
Udhampur Additional Deputy Commissioner Joginder Singh Jasrotia said a total of 14 individuals were referred to GMC, Udhampur with complaint of diarrhoea. He said two children died during treatment. Jasrotia said as per preliminary investigation, it is believed that the cause of illness was food poisoning.
The district administration has initiated an inquiry into the matter. A team has been constituted under the direct supervision of Udhampur DC that will visit the village.
