In a joint operation, security personnel neutralised two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists in an encounter at Warpora village in Sopore town of Baramulla district on Friday.
The Kashmir Zone police said in a Twitter post that the forces had seized incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, from the encounter site. “Both the terrorists, who were killed in the encounter, belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit,” a senior police official.
They have been identified as Warpora resident Fayaz Ahmad War, said to be an LeT commander, and Shaheen Ahmad Mir, alias Shaheen Molvi, of Cherpora Budgam. Fayaz was involved in several attacks and killings of civilians and security personnel.
The official said Fayaz was the last perpetrator of violence in north Kashmir. A police spokesman said Fayaz had been associated with terrorism since 2008.
Security personnel launched a cordon-and-search operation in and around the encounter site following information about the presence of ultras. “During the house-to-house search, the location of the terrorists was established and they were asked to surrender, but they refused,” the official said.
The search operation turned into an encounter when the holed-up militants started firing towards the positions of the security forces, triggering retaliation.
Both the militants were killed in the operation, which was carried out without any collateral damage, he said.
Kashmir IGP Vijay Kumar congratulated the security forces for the successful operation.
Security forces have killed 80 militants in the Valley since the beginning of this year.
