With jute bags, women stitch green future in Udhampur

In an initiative blending women’s empowerment and environmental preservation, more than 100 women from Udhampur’s Channi Mansar village are shaping a sustainable destiny.

Engaged in the Livelihood Enterprise Development Programme (LEDP), facilitated by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and implemented by Kristu Jyoti Social Welfare Society, Samba, these women are mastering the art of crafting eco-friendly jute bags.

The LEDP pursues a dual mission of advocating a plastic-free society and fostering women’s self-reliance. By imparting the skills needed to create jute bags, the programme not only empowers women to earn a living but also champions a cleaner environment. Enthusiastically embraced by women from various self-help groups in Channi Mansar, the programme divides them into two batches, each comprising 60 women.

Through comprehensive training, these women delve into the intricacies of jute bag creation, encompassing material understanding, sewing techniques and diverse designs.

Jute bags emerge as an environmentally conscious alternative to plastic bags, notorious for contributing to pollution. Biodegradable, durable and stylish, jute bags are gaining popularity among eco-conscious consumers. By adopting jute bags, these women forge not just a source of income but also become catalysts for environmental awareness in their community.

The LEDP initiative unfolds a promising future for Channi Mansar and its women, economically empowering them, nurturing environmental responsibility and fostering entrepreneurship.
