Youm-e-Ashura observed in Valley amid restrictions

Youm-e-Ashura was observed in several parts of the Valley amid restrictions imposed to prevent Muharram processions on Sunday.

Ashura is observed on the 10th day of the Muharram month to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, his family and companions during the 7th century battle of Karbala in present day Iraq.

Barbed wires were placed in several parts of Srinagar and Budgam districts to prevent ‘Zuljinah’ processions taken out on Ashura.

However, the Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman-e-Sharie-Shian (JKASS) spokesman said mourning ceremonies were held across the Valley, where scholars explained the philosophy of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, and different aspects of the battle of Karbala.

During the first 10 days of Muharram, Muslims, especially Shiites, mourn the martyrdom of grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Hussain, his family and companions by holding several religious functions.

The government had earlier announced restrictions on Muharram processions in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite that, processions were taken out. Several mourners had got injured yesterday after pellet guns were fired at a procession in Bemina area.
