As part of its campaign to curb illicit distillation of liquor, a team of the Excise Department carried out a search operation on the banks of the Sutlej. The department seized 22,000 litres of lahan (country-made liquor) and 200 litres of illicit liquor and destroyed these near the river banks.

Apart from this, the department also seized 12 plastic tarpaulins, six iron drums and four utensils.

The operation was led by the Assistant Commissioner (Excise), Jalandhar West, Navjeet Singh, along with excise officer Hemant Sharma, excise inspectors Ram Murti, Sahil Ranga Manjit Singh and Harjit Singh and the police.

During the search, the team covered 25 kms alongside the river banks on the Jalandhar side and seized 22,000 litres of lahan in 12 plastic tarpaulins. Further, the team also seized 200 litres of illicit liquor, six iron drums and four utensils.

A spokesperson for the department said crackdown against illicit liquor and distillation would be intensified in the coming days and strict action would be initiated against those found indulged in this malpractice.

Moreover, an awareness campaign against illicit liquor was also launched in the Jalandhar West range by the team. Houses situated on the banks of the Sutlej area in Nakodar, Nurmahal and Phillaur area were visited and people living in these areas were sensitised to the harmful effects of illicit liquor.
