A case had been registered at city police station, Phagwara, against unidentified assailants, and an investigation began. Madhvi Sharma said to trace the killers, a special team, headed by SP (Sub-Division) Bharat Bhushan and SHO Usha Rani, was constituted.

After working on multiple leads, the team apprehended three accused. Madhvi Sharma said during interrogation, it emerged that on the evening of October 27, the accused had procured a bottle of liquor from a vend in village Bhullarai and were consuming alcohol near Dana Mandi, Phagwara.

When e-rickshaw driver Kuldeep passed by, the trio stopped him near the Suvidha Centre with the intention of looting him. A scuffle broke out, during which accused Inshwinder Kaul, alias Baba, pulled out a .30-bore country-made pistol and fired two shots at Kuldeep, leaving him critically injured. The three fled the scene on a black-silver motorcycle without a registration number and went to the residence of accused Harman in village Naseerabad.
