The Shahkot police have booked five persons, including two women, on the charge of abetting suicide. Investigating officer Sukhwindar Pal Singh said that the accused have been identified as Sarabjit Kaur and Harbant Kaur of Mohalla Simbal, Shahkot, Ashok Kumar of Kirti Nagar, Hoshiarpur, Jora Singh of Kartar Nagar, Shahkot, and Ravindar Singh of Meinywal Moulvian village.

Sukhjit Kaur, wife of the deceased Sukhwindar Singh of Model Town, Shahkot, complained to the police that her husband was working as a clerk in Oversees Indian Bank, Nakodar. She further said that Sarabjit took Rs 16.67 lakh on credit, but refused to return it. When the victim went to their house, the accused and her sister Harbant Kaur insulted him.

The complainant said Ashok took Rs 2.40 lakh from them, of which he still had to return Rs 80,000. Jora also took money on credit, of which Rs 1.60 lakh still had to be returned. She added that whenever they demanded the money back, they were insulted, and this became a headache for her husband, who died by suicide by consuming celphos tablets on July 3. He also wrote a suicide note, blaming all accused for his death.

The complainant demanded action against the accused. The IO said that a case under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the BNS has been registered against the accused.
