55-year-old woman arrested for alleged desecration bid at Adampur gurdwara

A 55-year-old woman, Paramjit Kaur, was apprehended by villagers at the Chomon village in Adampur for allegedly attempting to desecrate the village gurdwara on Friday morning. The incident occurred at 6 am when the gurdwara granthi, Avtar Singh, saw Kaur on the live CCTV feed entering the gurdwara with unwashed feet and dirty socks, tearing cards advertising an event in another gurdwara, and later squatting by the holy book.

Kaur allegedly removed the "rumala" (cloth) covering the Guru Granthi Sahib and waved the 'Chaur Sahib' (Sikh ceremonial flying whisk) upon the holy book. The granthi immediately intervened, apprehending Kaur. He made announcements on the gurdwara loudspeaker, and villagers and religious groups soon assembled at the spot. A police team arrived and began investigations, and the villagers handed Kaur over to the police.

According to villagers, Kaur has a history of mental illness and has been residing in the village for 20 years. Her husband passed away several years ago, and her daughter lives in Canada. Kaur was reportedly on medication for depression.

The Adampur police have registered an FIR against Kaur under Section 299 of the BNS based on the complaint of Avtar Singh. DSP Adampur Kulwant Singh said, "Kaur has been arrested and the case is under further investigation."
