Act against cops or face protest: BJP to CP

A delegation of BJP leaders, led by district president Sushil Sharma, met Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur today, demanding strict action against police officers allegedly responsible for the suicide of a Dalit youth in Jalandhar Cantt.

The BJP leaders accused the police of harassment and corruption, which, they claimed, drove the young man to take his own life.

Accompanied by former MLA Sheetal Angural, leaders Sarabjit Makkar, Amarjit Singh Ameri, district general secretary Ashok Sareen Hickey, Amarjit Singh Goldy and other party members along with deceased family submitted a memorandum seeking immediate action.

Sharma said the role of the police was evident and that the victim’s family was now struggling for justice. He urged the CP to punish the guilty officers and lodge an FIR against them to send a strong message that no one is above the law.

"If justice is denied, people will unite and launch a mass movement against the incompetent government and the police administration will be held responsible," Sharma warned.

Angural raised concerns about corruption within the police force, alleging that some officers had turned the ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign into a means for extortion. While supporting efforts to make Punjab drug-free, he criticised officers exploiting the initiative for personal gain.

"If no action is taken against the rogue officers, it will expose the hollow claims of the Mann government and the dream of a drug-free, corruption-free Punjab will remain unfulfilled," Angural added.

He further emphasised that harassment of Dalit families would not be tolerated and warned that if a case was not registered against the accused officers soon, the BJP would escalate the matter to the Director General of Police, the Governor and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.

Other BJP leaders, including Kumar Jain, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ankur Goyal, George Sagar, Santokh Singh Sonu and Kuldeep Manak, were also present during the meeting.
