In a rather unprecedented move, the city police have asked the residents of adjoining colonies of bus stand to deposit their licenced weapons ahead of the visit of two CMs on Wednesday.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal will visit the city for the launch of buses to Delhi’s IGI airport.

Residents of Green Park locality, which falls exactly opposite to the bus stand, who own weapons, said they have been forced to deposit their weapons at the Division No. 7 police station.

They said they were earlier made to deposit weapons only at the time of elections and they were surprised at the repeated calls coming to us from our adjoining police post because of CMs’ visit.

They said there were no written orders and cops were being sent to their places to collect weapons in lieu of a receipt. An elderly man from the area who owns a weapon termed the move as sheer harassment.

DCP Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said, “Sometimes, we have such inputs that we need to prepare of list of weapon holders in the area and tell some of them to deposit their arms with us. We have done this for only a few house owners in the immediate vicinity of the bus stand.”
