Gurmeet Singh, who along with his elder brother Paramjit Singh ferried people to a safer location on their boats during the flooding last year, has been elected as sarpanch of Baupur Jadid village for the second time.

As Baupur Jadid was among the worst affected villages in the area, Gurmeet turned his house into a makeshift relief camp for flood-hit villagers and provided them with medicine and ration.

The brothers also helped the residents of neighbouring villages, including Baupur Kadim, Sangra, Mand Mubarakpur, Rampur Guara, Bhaini Kadar Baksh, Mand Sangra, Kishanpur Gatka, Muhamdabad and Bhaini Bahadur.

Gurpreet, who also served as sarpanch from 2019 to 2023, ensured overall development of the village. He said, “We witnessed floods in 1992, 2005, 2017, 2019 and 2023. We all stood together. I am thankful to the villagers for reposing faith in me.”
