The incident was reported around 12.30 pm when the victim after parking his car on the flyover took the extreme step. The deceased was identified as Ashok Sethi, a resident of Aman Nagar. He was residing with his wife. The Police Division 8 SHO said he was rushed to a nearby hospital but died on the spot due to his head injuries. The reason behind the suicide was still not known. No suicide note was received. However, his wife said he was disturbed for a long time due to a financial crisis. Earlier, he was running a food joint and was survived by his wife and a married daughter, the SHO said. The body was sent to the local Civil Hospital for autopsy and a case under Section 174 of IPC has been registered. TNS
Seminar on women health
Phagwara: A seminar was organised under the stewardship of college principal Kiranjeet Randhawa on ‘International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation’ in DAV College here on Thursday. In the seminar, students told the audience that the female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights, the health and integrity of girls and women. Girls, who undergo female genital mutilation, face short-term complications such as severe pain, shock, infections and long-term consequences for their reproductive health and mental health, students said. Work hit at e-kendras
Phagwara: The state government’s initiative of providing hassle-free services at e-sewa kendras has hit a roadblock in several parts of the state, including Phagwara subdivision. Though 11 e-sewa kendras were opened a few years ago, but eight of them were closed last year and only three of them were functioning at present. Unfortunately, three are non-functional either because of lack of Internet services or poor connectivity for the last several days. Though the government says the objective to open the kendras is to provide citizen-centric services online, people are being harassed and forced to waste several hours in wait of restoration of Internet services. District Health Officer Kuljit Singh said files of late entries and corrections in birth certificates were lying pending since last week. OC
