Activists of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba), led by state vice-president Kirpal Singh Mussapur and state press secretary Gurpal Singh Pala, on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta, demanding immediate repair and reconstruction of the slip road adjoining Golden Sandhar Sugar Mill in Phagwara.

The union leaders pointed out that the stretch from Hanumangarhi Temple to the sugar mill on the Jalandhar side has been in a severely dilapidated condition for a long time, causing inconvenience to both farmers and the general public. They said the road, which serves as a crucial link for transporting sugarcane during the crushing season and is also used daily by commuters, has become unsafe and difficult to navigate.

Speaking to the media after handing over the memorandum, Gurpal Singh Pala stressed that the slip road is essential for farmers and local residents to connect with the main city, yet its deteriorating condition has been consistently ignored. He also raised concerns over illegal encroachments along the route, which he said are further obstructing smooth traffic flow and worsening the situation.

The BKU (Doaba) leaders urged the district administration to take immediate steps to repair the road and clear the encroachments ahead of the upcoming sugarcane season. They emphasised that timely action is critical to prevent unnecessary hardships for farmers and the general public.
