The police have registered a case after the complaint of Aaurab, a resident of Shiv Nagar, Sofi Road, under Division No. 8, Commissionerate, Jalandhar.
According to the complainant, the wedding of his brother Sourav had been scheduled with Satvir Kaur, daughter of Sucha Singh from Mustafabad. The families from both sides had gathered at Milan Palace where the ceremonies were underway. After the Anand Karaj, the couple was seated on the stage for the shagun rituals, while close relatives surrounded them for photographs and traditional proceedings.
The complainant stated that his sister Pooja was carrying a handbag that contained the bride’s jewellery. The bag had a set of gold ornaments, including a pair of tops weighing four tolas, another pair of tops weighing one tola, along with silver anklets, silver bangles, and silver rings.
Around 4:30 pm, when Pooja went on the stage with the couple for photographs, she placed the handbag on a sofa behind the stage before posing for the camera.
However, once the photos were taken and she returned to carry the bag but it had vanished. Alarmed, the family immediately reviewed the venue’s CCTV footage. The recording allegedly showed a man dressed in a coat and trousers, accompanied by a young boy also wearing similar attire. The footage revealed the man signalling to the boy throughout the function. Moments later, the boy approached the sofa, removed his coat, covered the handbag with it, picked it up and discreetly exited the stage area. Shortly thereafter, the two were seen leaving the wedding hall.
The complainant added that the man and the boy walked outside the venue with the stolen bag and got into an auto-rickshaw parked near the entrance. The family immediately called the emergency helpline 112, following which the police arrived at the venue. A preliminary inquiry was conducted and CCTV footage was taken into possession.
Subsequent investigation by the family and police revealed the identity of one suspect as Kalu, a resident of Keirān, Madhya Pradesh.
The second suspect — a young boy who assisted him — remains unidentified. Both are believed to have fled with the jewellery from Milan Palace.
The police have launched a search for the suspects and further investigation is underway.
