Hundreds of residents, including Congress activists led by Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal today paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the local town hall on Gandhi Jayanti.

To mark the occasion, Municipal Commissioner Navneet Kaur Bal led various cleanliness initiatives under the Swachh Bharat Mission today.

During the event, the MC Commissioner paid floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Municipal Corporation premises. She emphasised on the Mahatma’s message that “Cleanliness is service”. While highlighting the MC activities, Bal said that it included a car rally with special participation from Feroz Khan, the brand ambassador of the MC, as well as a cycle rally, forming a human chain and cleanliness drives at religious sites, bus stands, railway station and major city markets to eliminate plastic waste.

In addition, a “Waste-to-Art” competition was held at Ramgarhia College (Arts), with students being awarded for their creativity. A plantation drive, titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A tree in the name of mother), saw trees being planted across different areas of the city, with geo-tagging for each one. The MC chief highlighted the efforts to raise awareness on cleanliness among residents through street plays performed at Hadiabad Chowk with the support of SD Putri School.
