Computer teachers to hold protest in Tarn Taran on Nov 8

The Punjab Computer Teachers’ Sangharsh Committee has announced a major ‘Flag March Maha Rally’ in the Tarn Taran constituency on Saturday.

The protest will be held to protest the Punjab government’s “forcible” dismantling of the peaceful dharna by computer teachers in Tarn Taran and alleged police brutality over the demonstrators.

Sangharsh committee leaders Vishal Binny, Shuminder, Raman, Ranjit Raghubir, Narinder Sharma and Narinder Gilgian said the protest was in response to the recent incident wherein an ongoing dharna outside the residence of AAP candidate Harmit Singh Sandhu was forcibly ended by the local police administration at the behest of the Punjab government.

They stated that during the eviction, some colleagues were arrested and detained at Gandhi Park. Further, when the teachers tried to burn an effigy of the government in protest against the action, the police allegedly engaged in a scuffle and lathi-charged them for two hours.

The leaders alleged that the government has adopted a dictatorial attitude by deploying a large number of police personnel to stop the demonstrators. They said it appeared as if the protesters were not teachers but terrorists. They stated that by committing such a

“shameful act”, the Punjab government had crossed all limits.

The teachers emphasised that when the law permits raising the voice for one’s rights, this action by the government is against democratic values.

The Sangharsh committee stated that in protest a massive public protest rally will be held in villages and towns of Tarn Taran on Saturday.

“The objective of the rally is to bring the government’s flawed policies before the by-election,” they added. The leaders said the state government will be fully responsible for any situation arising during the struggle.
