Dalit organisations stage march to protest defacing of Ambedkar’s statue

In a peaceful demonstration reflecting deep-rooted concerns over caste-based discrimination and historical disrespect, members of several Dalit and socio-political organisations staged a march through Phagwara today, calling for immediate governmental action.

The protest was triggered by an incident on March 31 in Phillaur, where unidentified individuals allegedly defaced a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar with Khalistani slogans and derogatory comments. The act has sparked outrage among followers of Dr Ambedkar’s ideology, who view the incident not just as an act of vandalism, but as a deliberate attack on the dignity of a national icon and the marginalised communities he represents.

The protesters, representing Ambedkar Sena Moolnivasi, BSP, Yuva Vikas Morcha and Guru Ravidas Tiger Force Punjab, emphasised the symbolic and emotional significance of Dr Ambedkar’s statues, particularly within Dalit communities. Their memorandum to the administration included a core demand —- immediate deployment of special police security at all Ambedkar statues within Phagwara and neighbouring areas.

Naib Tehsildar Gaurav Bansal received the memorandum in the absence of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Jashanpreet Singh. The delegation underscored the need for swift action to avoid further unrest, and warned that if their demands were not addressed within 48 hours, Dalit organisations would call for a “Phagwara Bandh”, potentially affecting daily life and commerce in the region.

While addressing the gathering, Yash Barna, Chairman of the Guru Ravidas Tiger Force, said, “This is not merely an act of mischief, it is an affront to our identity and our constitutional values. We demand accountability and assurance of respect for our icons.”
