Dhussi bundh embankments safe, 50K soil bags placed in last 10 days: Officials

Keeping in view floods in the Beas river, the Drainage Department will further strengthen the dhussi bundh embankments as precaution in the entire Kapurthala district. While Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal is taking hourly reports from the Drainage Department regarding the inflow of water, the work of further strengthening the dhussi bundh embankments in some areas is going on a war footing.

Sartaj Singh, XEN, Drainage Department, said, “Dhussi bundh embankments in Kapurthala district are completely safe. There is no threat to banks from floodwaters.”

He said, “People should not believe in rumours as there is no threat to dhussi bundhs in Kapurthala district.”

He said the department had placed more than 50,000 soil bags near embankments in the last 10 days as precautionary measure. He said the work was going on bundh at Mansurwal and Miani Bhagupuria villages in Bholath subdivision.

SDO Sukhpal Singh, who is supervising the work, said after heavy rain, information was received about water seeping from the dhussi bundh near Miani Bhagupuria village a few days ago. The department ensured strengthening of the bundh, he said.

Apart from this, crates filled with soil bags were laid at sensitive places. Similarly, crates filled with soil bags were placed on the bundh near Mansurwal.

SDO Khushvinder Singh, who is supervising the work in Kapurthala subdivision, said, “The work is going on to further strengthen the bundh at Peerewal and Dhaliwal Bet. Crates filled with soil bags have been placed at both the places.”

Besides, 1,200 feet long earthen crates have been laid on the bundh near Khijarpur in Sultanpur Lodhi.

SDO Vijay Kumar, who is getting work done on the bundh near Nabipur and Bharoana villages said, “Wire crates are being installed on the bundh near Nabipur. With the help of villagers, earthen bags are being laid near Bharoana village.”
