The initiative aims to honour the sport’s remarkable century-long journey and inspire enthusiasm for hockey among the youth. Hockey Punjab president Nitin Kohli and general secretary Amrik Singh Powar said as per Hockey India’s guidelines, one boys’ match and one girls’ match will be played in each district on November 7.

They highlighted that Indian Hockey’s 100-year journey is filled with historic achievements, including eight Olympic gold medals, establishing India as one of the most successful teams in the sport’s history. In recent years, Indian Hockey has experienced a resurgence, marked by bronze medal wins at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games, where players from Punjab made significant contributions to the team’s success.

The celebration is not only to remember our glorious past, but also to motivate the next generation of players to take hockey to greater heights, said Kohli and Powar. The district-level matches are expected to see enthusiastic participation from young athletes and hockey lovers across Punjab, reflecting the state’s deep-rooted passion for the National Game. In Jalandhar, Surjit Hockey Academy will organise two matches at Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park, starting at 8 am. The fixtures are: PIS-XI vs Jalandhar-XI and Surjit-XI vs Alpha-XI.

The academy president noted that the event will serve as both a tribute to hockey’s glorious legacy and an inspiration for future. “All hockey lovers are requested to join this historic celebration,” he said.
